Get Ready Before the Season Opens
Fall hunting season waits for no one. Whether you're chasing whitetail deer, wild turkey, or waterfowl, showing up prepared is the difference between a successful hunt and a frustrating one. Use this checklist to make sure you've got everything dialed in before opening day.
Licensing & Regulations (Do This First)
- Purchase your state hunting license
- Buy any required tags or stamps (deer, turkey, waterfowl, etc.)
- Review your state's season dates, bag limits, and legal shooting hours
- Check for any new regulations or zone changes for 2026
- Complete any required hunter education courses if applicable
Clothing & Layering System
Staying comfortable in the field means dressing in layers you can add or remove as temperatures change throughout the day.
- Base layer: Moisture-wicking, scent-control fabric
- Mid layer: Fleece or insulated jacket for warmth
- Outer layer: Waterproof, windproof camo jacket and pants
- Camo or blaze orange hat (check your state's requirements)
- Insulated, waterproof hunting boots
- Wool or synthetic hunting socks (bring extras)
- Scent-control gloves
- Face mask or camo face paint
Firearms & Archery Equipment
- Rifle, shotgun, or bow — cleaned, inspected, and sighted in
- Ammunition or arrows (bring more than you think you need)
- Gun case or bow case for transport
- Trigger lock or cable lock for safe storage
- Cleaning kit for field maintenance
- Ear protection and safety glasses for the range
Optics & Navigation
- Binoculars (8x42 or 10x42 are great all-around choices)
- Rangefinder
- Rifle scope (zeroed and protected with lens covers)
- GPS device or downloaded offline maps on your phone
- Compass (always carry a backup)
- Topographic maps of your hunting area
Field Dressing & Processing
- Sharp hunting knife (fixed blade preferred)
- Bone saw or folding saw
- Latex or nitrile gloves
- Game bags to keep meat clean
- Paracord for hanging game
- Cooler with ice for transporting meat
- Meat thermometer
Survival & Safety Essentials
- First aid kit
- Emergency whistle and signal mirror
- Fire starter (lighter + waterproof matches + ferro rod)

- Sleeping pad or cot
- Portable power station for charging devices and running lights
- Propane stove or camp stove + fuel

- Bear canister or hang bag for food storage
Scouting & Hunting Accessories
- Trail cameras (check and charge batteries)
- Tree stand or ground blind

- Deer calls, grunt tubes, or turkey calls

- Drag rope or game cart for retrieving harvested animals
Vehicle & Transport
- Full tank of gas before heading out
